While so much has changed in social media over the years, one trend has remained the same—the tendency for mediums to copy one another.
Each time a popular social media platform debuts or releases a new update, it seems like others are quick to copy what they’re doing. And with some of these seemingly becoming blended versions of one another, you, as a business owner, might be wondering which is best for your needs. After all, at this point, many offer the same features.
When working on your social media marketing strategy, it’s essential to closely consider your audience, their behavior, and which medium they prefer.
Users Are in Control
Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok have very similar features. However, while all three offer a TikTok-style short video clip option, it’s the users within each medium who determine what kind of content is popular. With this in mind, and considering your target audience, you can make an informed decision about where and how to release your content.
For example, Facebook has grown up—a majority of its users are aging millennials. So, before posting there, consider if your target audience is primarily in this space, or if you should put your efforts elsewhere. If you sell products geared toward a younger audience, let’s say college students, then you’ll want to use TikTok instead. While both offer a functional and effective video-sharing option, you should know where your customers are and target content in the appropriate place.

Repurposing is Impactful
Perhaps you have a wide audience range active on all of the social media platforms—that’s great!
However, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed trying to come up with enough content to feed all the consumers on three or four different mediums. Luckily, you don’t have to start from square one each time.
Repurposing content is a common practice among the top social media marketers and something you should be doing as well. So what is it?
Say you make a piece of content that’s geared toward millennials using Facebook. Now take that same message, change the wording and lingo (get hip), adjust your visuals, and voila… you now have something that you could use for TikTok or Snapchat.
When you’re repurposing content, do so with intent. Consider why and whom you’re adjusting for, and tailor ideas around creative solutions you believe will impact a particular audience.
